Why should I volunteer?
AYSO is a non-profit, fully volunteer
organization. This region/league is and will not be able to run
without volunteers. It takes over 250 volunteers in order to
make this a successful program and we count on each and every
one of you to help this league out. But the most important
reason is to volunteer for your children, to give them a great
experience! Each and every one of us volunteer our time to give
our own children an exceptional experience, but also to give all
the children in our community a great, healthy and rewarding
activity. Please help us to put on a truly memorable season by
volunteering with our league!
Who do I contact to volunteer ?
Email rc@ayso710.org .
I do not have a lot of time to volunteer. Are there duties
that I may help out with?
There are many positions and duties which need to be performed
that do not require a huge commitment. Our fields need to be
painted at least once a week and the league is dependent on the
kindness of our parents to help us maintain the field lines. We
also have referee positions and if every once in awhile you can
referee a game or two, this helps everyone (the league provides
training to referees in a one day course and you may contact our
Referee Administrator directly through
referee@ayso710.org). It keeps our
children safe and alleviates other referees from doing that
particular game. The league puts on several different events, such as Soccerfest,
Awards Ceremonies
and the Volunteer & Sponsorship Appreciation Dinner. These are
one day event, but require a lot of prep work to put on and
volunteers are always sought to help out on these events. Help
at our registrations is always appreciated and there are many
smaller board positions that do not require a huge time
commitment, such as Division Coordinators, Awards Coordinator, Equipment Recycling Coordinator,
Field Maintenance Assistant and Equipment Assistant. If you would like to help
the league out, please drop the Regional Commissioner a line at
rc@ayso710.org.
Wait List - what does this mean?
A week to two weeks after our last "early
registration," this region does what is called a "team drop."
This is where we drop all the players onto teams. Each division
has a maximum number of players per team. Our region calculates
this number by making certain that each player is able to play
3/4 of a game. AYSO National standards requires that each player
must play 1/2 the game. We usually try to leave space for growth
on each team, but this is determined by the total number of
players so the amount of growth per each division can fluctuate.
What this mean is to you is that if you register after "early
registration," certain factors contribute to placing players on
teams.
We continue taking registrations throughout
our season; however, certain factors contribute towards the
placement of these newly registered players. First, whether
there are any openings on existing team, if so, we will drop
newly registered players on these team. However, if teams are
filled to maximum numbers, we do place players on a wait list
waiting on several actions to occur:
-
100% refund request ends on July
1st; therefore, we should shortly know if any spaces open up
on maxed teams.
-
If no openings happen through
this... we may hold newly registered players on a wait list
until second week of July determine whether we have enough
players to create a new team.
-
If we do not receive enough
players to create a new team, then we look at existing teams
and determine whether those players can be added to teams,
increasing the max per team.
-
In very rare circumstances, we
may not be able to place a player onto a team, in this case
a full refund will be given.
When does my child have practices and games? Where are
practices and games conducted?
Practices take place Monday through
Fridays, twice a week, after 5:00 p.m. The time, days and
location of these practices is dependent upon the time and day
that the coach picks out for the practice. Since the coach is
our number one volunteer in AYSO, he/she decides the best time
for their practice and day. Locations are dependent upon how
many teams/children are within a division. Our practice fields
are scattered throughout the North Valley's covering Golden
Valley, Lemmon Valley, Stead and the Cold Springs area. To see a listing of
all the practice fields we utilize, please click on the
Parent & Player page section of this website. Practices are never held at
the North Valley's Regional Sports Complex (this is reserved for
games only).
Games are held only on Saturdays at the
North Valley's Regional Sports Complex. We hope to continue to
be able to keep all games in one location, but with the
expansion of the North Valley's, it is becoming increasingly
difficult to keep our fields at the North Valley's Regional
Sports Complex. Football has also been expanding in the North
Valley's and over the past couple of years, AYSO region 710 has
lost some of its fields to accommodate this expansion.
Unfortunately, the region rarely knows their fields until just
shortly before our season begins.
Example:
Child 1: U-12 division: practices: Monday and Thursday,
5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Saturday game: 8:00 a.m. to 9:00
a.m.
How long do our children practice and play games?
The amount of time a child practices is the
same amount of time as a game. The amount of time is also
dependent on which division your child is in. Practices are
conducted two times per week at the same duration as a game.
Division Game Durations
U-6
four five (5) minute periods. Half-time break of 5-10 minutes
= 30 minute practice
U-8
four ten (10) minute periods. Half-time break of 5-10 minutes =
50 minute practice
U-10 four
twelve and a half (12.5) minute periods. Half-time break
of 5-10 minutes = 60 minute practice
U-12 four
fifteen (15) minute periods. Half-time break of 5-10 minutes =
70 minute practice
U-16 four
twenty (20) minute periods. Half-time break of 5-10 minutes = 90
minute practice
Example: U-6 Practice Monday and
Thursday, times from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
What are the rules of soccer?

What ages can play in AYSO?
Children from 4 1/2 to 15 years old can play soccer on AYSO
teams. Players are put into proper age groups like U-6,
U-8, U-10, U-12 and U-14/U-16 . The U stands for under the age as of July
31st.
How are players assigned to age group?
Why is my child playing
Under 10 when he/she is currently 8 years old? It may seem
confusing. If you keep two things in mind, it really is quite
simple. Ages are set as of July 31st and are set for
the coming Fall season. For example, a child who will be 8 on
June 15th is no longer under 8 on July 31st. This
child will be assigned to U-10 (Under 10) for Fall season.
AYSO Region 710 follows the AYSO National Rules for age
assignment.
What if we are located in a different area of Reno or
Sparks? What AYSO leagues covers these areas?
Currently, Region 710 is the only AYSO
league covering the Reno area. There is no AYSO league which
covers the South of Reno, mainly due to field constraints.
Fields in the South of Reno are utilized by different leagues
not affiliated with AYSO or its philosophies. Sparks does
currently have its own AYSO league which utilizes fields in
Sparks and Spanish Springs. Sparks website is
www.sparksayso.org.
What are the fees?
The fees may vary year to year dependent upon a budget which is
done each year by the end of February. Please see our
Regional Information page
for the current budget and our Registrar
page for current registration information and current fees.
What do the fees pay for?
18% -> Training (board members, coaches & referees)
15%
-> Uniforms (jersey, shorts and socks)
12%
-> AYSO National player payments
10%
-> Field expenses (payment of field fees to County and
City, repair parts, nets, etc..)
8% -> equipment (balls, cones,
goals, nets, ice bags)
8% -> Capital investments (future equipment purchases).
8% -> Trophies
3% -> Team and individual
pictures
18%-> Other (registration costs, facility use fees, advertising
and overhead expenses such as
phones, copy machines, ink cartridges, printing of materials, etc..)
Why is registration held so far in advance of the Fall
season?
Usually this league consists of 600 to 700 children. Teams must
be put together and coaches, assistant coaches and referees
obtained and trained prior to the season beginning. It takes
approximately two months in order to pull all of these aspects
together.
What is Early versus Regular Registration?
Regular registration begins the day after early registration is
over. The fee increases once regular registration begins.
Early registration allows us to pull the league play together in
the best possible way. It gives us time to generate balanced
teams and to train and investigate those individuals who will be
involved in the soccer season, making certain our children are
safe. Regular registration applicants may be placed on
teams that are not yet full. However, if no spots are
available, regular registration applicants are not guaranteed a
place on a team, they are designated to a wait list until a full
team can be put together and a coach and assistant coach
obtained. AYSO region 710 will do its best to place a player -
but if enough players do not sign up for a division to make a
full team, the region will be unable to place them and a full
refund will be given. Also, if we are unable to recruit a parent
to coach a team, a team may need to be refunded their
registration fees. Our league works solely on parents
volunteering and without those volunteers the league cannot put
on a season or may not be able to field a team.
What size ball is correct?
Size 3 for U-6 and U-8.
Size 4 for U-10 and U-12.
Size 5 for U-14 and higher.
What equipment is needed for practice?
Shin Pads covered completely by socks (shin guards are mandatory
to play or practice)
Shin guard quality has a large range. Utmost, when buying a shin
guard, you will be looking for a product that molds to their
shins and calves and doesn't loose that molding ability quickly,
that is not loose and slides around and allows air exchange. The
most popular size of shin guard purchased is a medium size;
however, when you are purchasing the shin guard if you hold it
to their shin and it appears to fit to their leg contour, that
is the size you should purchase. Some shin guards come with an
ankle brace and this particular style will be a parent
preference. Ankle injuries can and will happen in a sport which
involves only the legs, so if you wish to protect their ankles
as well, you might look at shin guards that incorporate this
feature.
Soccer Cleats (absolutely
no metal spikes allowed) or
Sneakers.
Shoes that are not allowed: Baseball cleats (rubber
spikes or metal
spikes) are not allowed (cleat in center of toe) or
football
cleats. Please
click links for pictures of each type of cleat in order to see
the difference. If you shop at a non-specialty store, many
times
the employees do not know the difference between the cleats.
No jewelry of any kind. Medical bracelets must be taped down.
A soccer ball (its more fun when everyone has one).
Water bottle (they must have water at every practice and every
game).
Where can I purchase the equipment the player needs?
AYSO National has a store online called "The AYSO Store." All of
the equipment necessary to play the sport is located at
http://www.aysostore.com/
. Also, during registration, Region 710 will be selling a
few items such as shin guards during the registration. If you
would like to buy the equipment locally, below are places that
stock soccer equipment:
Soccer's Edge
5000 Smithridge Dr 828-7627

Does AYSO Region 710 teams participate in tournaments or
playoffs?
This region currently participates in intra region playoffs
where trophies for Sportsmanship, first and second place are
awarded within the U-10 through U-16 divisions. U-6 and U-8
divisions have a jamboree which is a fun day of playing soccer
without trophies, and medallions are given to all the children
within the league.
Tournaments are between different AYSO regions and as of yet,
Region 710 does not participate or send teams to tournaments.
Our region is hoping in the near future to do such events;
however, our volunteer base must be expanded before we are
capable of participating or holding such an event.
Last year began our first ever inter-regional sportsmanship
tournament with the Sparks Region 166. The U-16 sportsmanship
winning team went on to compete with the Sparks sportsmanship
winning team. We will again be having this inter-regional
sportsmanship tournament and hope to extend it to 1 or 2 more
divisions this year.
Does my child need to try out for a team or can he/she be on
a specific team?
AYSO plays under five philosophies of:
Balanced teams
Everyone plays
Open registration
Good sportsmanship
Positive coaching
In order to adhere to these philosophies, AYSO is a
non-competitive league; therefore, there are no try-outs for
teams and teams are balanced according to children's' skills,
experience, height and weight. For the 2007 season, the region
will attempt to implement a "rating system" which will rate
children's skills so that more balanced teams can be formed. AYSO strives to maintain balanced
teams which will give all of our children a fun and healthy
activity. AYSO does not accept requests for a children to be on a
specific team or with a specific coach (unless the coach is the
parent of a child). Teams are created through a blind drop where
only the above attributes are taken into consideration. AYSO
adheres to this goal to make certain all of the children have
fun playing soccer!
